Electrophoresis is a laboratory technique used to separate DNA, RNA, or protein molecules based on their size and electrical charge. An electric current is used to move molecules to be separated through a gel. Agarose gel electrophoresis is employed to check the progression of a restriction enzyme digestion, to quickly determine the yield and purity of DNA isolation or PCR reaction, and to size fractionate DNA molecules, which then could be purified from the gel if necessary.
